Advent—A Time to Learn How to Wait

We are in the last week of this liturgical year and begin our classroom preparations for the St. Luke School Christmas Pageant which takes place on Thursday, December 20th, at 6:30 p.m. in the church.

Carlo Carretto, the renowned spiritual writer, spent many years living alone as a hermit in the Sahara desert. He wrote a number of books from that place of solitude, including one entitled, Letters from the Desert. In that book, he has a message for those of us who live busy lives in the world. “What is God trying to say to us in our busy lives?” He suggests this: “Be patient! Learn to wait—for each other, for love, for happiness, for God!”

Learn to wait! That's not something we do easily and many of our problems flow from that. We often don't wait properly for things. Christian living takes place ‘between the times,’ between the first coming of Christ and his second coming. The first coming was humble, to say the least: an infant born of poor parents in an obscure village. Jesus came to us in Bethlehem to renew the world in love and justice. Christ will come again to fulfill God’s promise of love and justice. The readings for the first week of Advent is as follows:

Reading I: Jeremiah 33:14-16
Responsorial Psalm 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14
Reading II: 1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2
Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

Parish Ministries Working Together

Annual Advent "Rosemarie Doyle"
Project for Homeless Men

The Homeless Project is a PARISH-WIDE event that began in the mid-‘80s when we discovered that most of the family and/or women’s shelters were remembered by many churches and civic groups during the holidays, but the men at the single shelter were being overlooked.  Each year our parish families provide over 250 sets of hats, gloves & scarves for Stockton’s homeless men. Socks (also serving as stockings) are donated by CRE.  Candy and fruit are donated by the Pre-School.

Our SCHOOL FAMILIES bring in small travel size toiletry items (they are more economical and fit in the Christmas stockings)!  Providing for 250+ often forgotten men is a large job, but our school has always helped us reach our goal!

Please encourage your children to bring toiletry items to class anytime until December 20.   Help us make Christmas a little brighter for our brothers at the Stockton Shelter.

Kinder and 1st Grade
Disposable Razors, Combs & small Shaving Creams

2nd & 3rd Grades
Bars of Soap & travel size mens’ Shampoos

4th Grade

5th & 6th Grades
Small boxes of Band-aids & travel packs of Kleenex

7th & 8th Grades
Toothbrushes and travel size Toothpaste

Invite your child(ren) to shop with you, and if they can, share in the picking out and buying of the toiletry items.  Discuss as a family how these small items can help make the day a little better and brighter for a homeless man.
