Social Worker Corner

A Message from Mrs. MaCall:

Hello Paloma Families,

I would like to WELCOME all of our new families. I am your School Social Worker, I am here to provide support for your students social/emotional needs while striving to promote their academic and social success.  If you have any questions in regards to my services or the support I can offer you or child please let me know. I am here to serve you!

This year I have created a way for parents to refer their own children. This Parent/Guardian Form- School Social Worker Referral allows you to submit a referral ONLINE! It's a quick and easy way to get services for your child.  I also encourage you to visit my School Social Worker Page on our School Website for more information.

Announcements: SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH!

Good attendance can impact your child in the most positive way. I’d like to challenge every single one of you to aim for perfect attendance this month.

Did you know?

  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
  • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

What can I do as a Parent/Guardian?

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Layout clothes and backpacks the night before.
  • Find out what time school starts and make sure your child is informed.
  • Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help them transition.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
  • Keep good communication between home and school! If you are unsure of your school's attendance policy, call the office/school social worker and ask.
